WEST Wilts achieved a third clean sheet in a row on Saturday and with one
game left it looks like the promotion battle has finally been won.
The results leaves them second in the table, five points clear of third
place, with one league match left to play.
West Wilts started with determination as soon as the whistle blew and before
Gryphons had time to settle West Wilts had scored their first with Dave
Yalland netting his 15th goal of the season.
West Wilts continued to push forward and won a short corner. The Somerset
Gryphons goalkeeper saved the first shot but Will Powell was on hand to slot
the rebound into the net. Just before half-time great team-work from Martin
Allsop and Nathan Hutchings resulted in a third goal for West Wilts.
The home side looked comfortable at the start of the second half, which led
to some great hockey being played. Robert Kerr-Bonner stepped up to take a
short corner hit which found the bottom right corner of the goal to make it
4-0 and Dan Sheppard created the fifth goal when he drove into the D and
placed the ball just above the backboard.
Twenty minutes into the second half Somerset Gryphons looked threatening but
their attacks only resulted in a West Wilts player receiving a yellow card.
West Wilts replied by scoring the sixth and final goal of the game.
Man-of-the-match was Dan Sheppard and special mention goes to goalkeeper Ben
Hutchins, with his third clean sheet in a row.
Wilts travel away to North Bristol this coming Saturday for their final
league game of the season.
