West Wilts Ladies 0, Norton Down 0
WEST Wilts lost top place in Wessex Division One as they were held to a
goal-less draw by a side they comfortably beat in their first encounter in
this penultimate league match of the season.
Equal on points, Bath Buccs now take the lead again on goal difference with
just one match left this season which sees Wilts take on Marlborough at
home.
Seeking a win to maintain their position at the top of the division, it was
a jittery Wilts who once again seemed to lack confidence under pressure.
An inability to retain possession allowed Norton Down several opportunities
to intercept play resulting in promising Wilts attacks breaking down at the
critical time.
Wilts showed determination in midfield to recover lost play and demonstrated
some good supportive passing across the pitch. However Norton were
relentless in their mid-pitch battling, preventing Wilts from looking in
control and likely to score.
It was a subdued Wilts that regrouped at half-time, knowing they were
playing below their capabilities.
The second half saw a brighter Wilts take more possession of the ball and
pushing on the attack, several opportunities to strike at goal were taken.
Fiona Pridham and Helen Culverhouse were unlucky not to score from several
shots that went wide of the goal, with Anji Whittamore and Jess Mclean
undertaking some attacking battles in the Norton circle.
However Norton continued to defend tightly and in turn took advantage of
some midfield breaks, forcing Jo Pothecary to make some strong interceptions
on the far right.
