Chippenham end on a low note
 |
| Nigel Stonham |
Chippenham 2, Firebrands 3
CHIPPENHAM suffered a disappointing defeat in their last league game of the
season.
With their usual goalkeeper Howard Simons unavailable, Nigel Stonham played
for the first time in goal.
It was the visitors who opened the scoring early on following a scuffle in
the D. Good tackling from Thomas, Morris and Hamilton in the centre could
not prevent another counter-attack from Firebrands and after the initial
shot was saved, the rebound was put away with ease for a second goal.
Chippenham pulled a goal back when the skills of Knight broke through the
defence down the right hand side and smashed the ball into the bottom
corner. Morris then equalised with a hard, fierce shot from the top of the
circle.
After the interval, the home team looked stronger but could not find the
goal to take the lead. Further strong tackling from Bean, Heartford and
Sampson could not stop Firebrands breaking down the right hand side and an
excellent stick save from Stonham rebounded out to a free forward in the D
who scored the third goal for the visitors.
The score remained at 2-3 right up until the final whistle when Chippenham
were awarded a penalty corner. The ball came out to Knight who drag flicked
over the goalkeeper but an excellent save on the line gave Firebrands the
three points.
