Getting your kit on is down to personal choice

I DIDN'T see New Zealand batsman Daniel Flynn get hit in the face by the ball in the Test match.

Whether I wear protective gear as a batsman depends on the opposition. I weigh them up and if they have got someone particularly quick then I'd wear a helmet, but generally when I'm number six, seven or eight the quickies are off and the balls are a little bit old, so I don't wear a helmet. As regards other equipment I just wear the normal stuff, batting pads, thigh pads and a box.

As a wicketkeeper wearing a helmet is something I've rarely done, although I've worn one on a couple of occasions when the wicket was particularly bad.

I've been quite lucky with injuries. I've been struck by a ball as a wicketkeeper and being hit on the knee is quite a common one but I haven't had broken fingers or anything like that.

Now, all batsmen under 16 have to wear a helmet and wicketkeepers as well, but I was brought up never wearing one. Once you get to senior level it's down to individual choice. I don't necessarily feel comfortable wearing a helmet and the rules and regulations weren't in place when I was young. I try not to wear one where possible.
