Haines wins at Saltford

BREAN director of golf David Haines revelled in the calm conditions to win the latest Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal at Saltford.

His three-under-par score of 66 over Saltford's winter layout left John Goymer (Wheathill) and amateur Matt Kippen (Enmore Park) one shot behind.

Recently Haines has been under a serious challenge for the order of merit lead but he has now re-established a clear lead and he is now looking good to regain the title he won two years ago.

Haines opened with a birdie but had dropped two shots by the turn. He started back with three pars before he produced an explosive finish with five birdies in the last six holes to cover the homeward nine in just 29 strokes.

With six birdies he felt confident of adding the birdie sweep money to the first place prize money. So imagine his surprise when Goymer's card showed an amazing eight birdies in a topsy-turvy round.

Somerset county player Kippen also excelled on the inward half. He carded four birdies to return in 30 and record his best finish yet in a G&S PGA event.

Challenge Tour player Lee Corfield (Burnham and Berrow) was the only other player to break par and was fourth on 68.
