Heavy overnight rain and difficult conditions resulted in several very high-scoring games in the preliminary round of the Chantry Digital Ltd of Trowbridge-sponsored Knockout Cup.

Trowbridge Town A led the way with 13 without reply against a struggling Steeple Ashton Reserves side who were without several of their regular players.

B King-Taylor led the way with five to his credit, while D Burrows and R Baggs both notched up hat-tricks, with M Little and J Grant completing the tally.

Bradford United 6, Westfield FC 0

BRADFORD United were up against league newcomers Westfield from Radstock and the Division One side soon asserted their authority by running up a 4-0 half-time lead at Culver Close.

New signing Elliot Hinton made an immediate impression by scoring four goals, while an own goal and another strike by Skip Ayoub completed a comfortable 6-0 passage into the next round.

Seend United 8, FC Northbridge 1

REIGNING Division One champions Seend United proved too strong for FC Northbridge.

Seend got off to the best possible start with a goal in the first minute from Gary Higdon. Seend continued to press for a second goal which didn't come until the 35th minute with another for Gary Higdon.

It was now all Seend and they should have added to their total before half-time but the FC Northbridge defence held firm and no further goals came in the first half.

However, it was the same story in the second half, with Seend well on top and looking to add to their tally which wasn't long in coming through a third goal from Leigh Stevenson. Seend continued to push forward and were rewarded with a fourth goal from defender Ben Grinham with a powerful header from a corner.

Seend began to take their foot off the pedal and they were soon brought back to earth when FC Northbridge reduced the arrears in the 60th minute with a lob from James Starr.

However, within three minutes the four goal margin had been restored with a third goal for Gary Higdon. Seend continued to dominate and Gary Higdon added a further two goals to his personal score to five in the 65th and 70th minute before James Eatough wrapped it up for Seend in the 85th minute giving them an 8-1 win which was well deserved.

The Deverills 6, FC Chippenham Youth A

THE Deverills were also in the mood for goals and notched up six without reply against a young FC Chippenham side, whose excellent sportsmanship was a credit to them and to the new FA Respect programme which all clubs have been asked to consider.

Nick Bunyard scored a hat-trick for the home side and despite a splendid performance by the visiting goalkeeper further goals followed in the second half from Lee Carpenter (2) and Mike Payne.

Sugar Rays Sports Bar 1, Freshford United 4

THE first game of the season for the newly-formed Sugar Rays Sports Bar team resulted in a 4-1 defeat in a hard fought game against the more experienced Freshford United side.

Within ten minutes Sugar Rays were 2-0 down, with Neil Hannaford slotting home the first two goals in at the bottom corner.

The home team fought back through a rare Jake Gaines header and had the bit between their teeth for the next 20 minutes with two chances to draw level.

Within the first ten minutes of the second half they had another two chances to grab an equaliser, but the chances went begging again.

In a swift counter attack Freshford went 3-1 ahead through Mark Birleson with a great long-range top corner effort. Rich Bliha was then fouled in the area and stepped up to take the spot kick, but the keeper saved and Freshford cleared their lines, and went on to complete a comfortable win with a gift goal when Sugar Ray's keeper came out and missed the ball, leaving Phil Little a simple chance to make it 4-1.

Steeple Ashton 7, Foresters 0

STEEPLE Ashton cruised to victory over their newly elected opponents Foresters.

Ashton's goalkeeper made an early save to keep the scores level but from then on Ashton pushed forward and looked like scoring in every attack.

Hindle opened the scoring when he tapped in Frisby's free kick and Dean Gumm soon made it 2-0 when he fired home from 15 yards. A ball over the top saw Gumm race through and fire past Spear in the away side's goal to make it 3-0.

Jones was forced into another smart save for Ashton, but then Gumm went clean through but fired over with only the goalkeeper to beat. Ashton grabbed a fourth when Gumm rounded the keeper to complete his hat-trick.

Frisby should have added Ashton's fifth immediately after this but shot just wide.

In the opening minute of the second-half Sam Stevens made a mess of a one-on-one and Foresters got the ball away. Serafimov then found Gumm who beat his man and slotted his shot into the bottom corner for his fourth goal and Ashton's fifth.

A Foresters' mix-up led to George Mortimer tapping into an empty net to make it 6-0 and Mike Hindle then tapped in his second goal to complete the 7-0 tally.

Broughton Gifford 7, Heytesbury 1

BROUGHTON Gifford also joined in the goal feast in putting seven past the Heytesbury goalkeeper.

After Richard Radcliffe had opened the scoring to give the home side a 1-0 half-time lead, the floodgates opened after the interval and Julian Putt, Sean Fordham and Leigh Rowles-Hitchcock (2) added further strikes before John Spence (2) completed the tally with his first ever goals for the club.

Paul Dredge scored a consolation goal for Heytesbury.

Bratton 1, Frome Town Sports 2

BRATTON'S home tie against Frome Town Sports had to be switched to Frome because of the state of Bratton's pitch.

After a closely fought first half, which saw the teams level at 1-1, Frome Town Sports finally managed to come out on top with a winner by Sam Anstis to add to Damien Edward's goal before the interval.

Westbury United A 3, Bromham Reserves 0

WESTBURY United A had a more comfortable afternoon in beating Bromham Reserves 3-0.

The goals came from Kieran Stone, Gary Tugwell and Dale Rowlands.

Westwood 5, Bradford United Reserves 0

WESTWOOD eased into the next round with a 5-0 home win over Bradford United Reserves.

The goals came from Tom Downes (2), Daniel Thorne, Gary Day and Ben Mees.

Trowbridge Wanderers 3, Seend United Reserves 3 (aet)

TROWBRIDGE Wanderers and Seend United Reserves both go into the hat for the draw for the next round after a keenly contested 3-3 draw after extra-time.

Mark Reynolds, Tom Pang and Sam Dawson scored for the Wanderers, but two goals from Dan Humphries and an equaliser from Mike Haines with only two minutes of extra time to go means a replay on September 27.

North Bradley 4, Blue Circle 1

NORTH Bradley, newly elected to Division Three, caused the biggest upset of the round by beating Division One side Blue Circle 4-2.

Neil Maidment, Pete Stephenson and Brent Murden (2) were on target for the villagers, while Shaun Shepp and Darrell Maxwell replied for the losers.

Lavington's scheduled home tie against Calne Eagles was a casualty of the weather.
