Magpies hit back for stunning cup triumph
Westbury United A's Jordan Duillau takes on the Heytesbury defence (21410/2)
Westbury United A's Jordan Duillau takes on the Heytesbury defence (21410/2)

St Andrews Winsley have taken a narrow one goal first leg lead in their weather delayed first round match in the E J Shanley and Son Limited-sponsored Division Two Cup.

With the first half ending goal-less both teams went in search of glory in the second and Bratton struck first through Dan Cox.

The lead lasted only five minutes as Lewis Meaden equalised for the Saints.

With time running out and both teams going for the winner, Tom Giles latched onto a rare error in the Bratton midfield to secure the win by beating the Bratton goalkeeper with a thunderbolt of a shot.

FC Chippenham Youth Reserves 0, Semington Magpies 6 (Semington Magpies win 8-7 on aggregate)

SEMINGTON Magpies pulled off the comeback of the season after finding themselves 7-2 down after the first leg.

The Magpies knew it would take something special to progress into the next round and they dominated the whole game.

They took the lead after just two minutes when Matt Russell beat two players and found the back of the net from 20 yards. Stuart Barber made it 2-0 with only five minutes of the game gone when he flicked the ball over a defender's head and volleyed into the roof of the net from just outside the box.

Chippenham kept the deficit to two goals during the first half and must have thought they would still win the tie.

Early in the second half Matt Russell got his second of the game and Magpies' third with a superb solo goal. Rich Allum then gave Magpies real hope when he smashed home a Mark James corner from eight yards after Chippenham failed to clear.

Stuart Barber made it 5-0 and 7-7 on aggregate when Andy Harrison flicked the ball on for Barber to smash home from the edge of the box.

Simon Hillman sent Magpies flying into the next round when he calmly slotted home at the back post from a Mark James corner with only four minutes left on the clock.

Mere Town 8, Frome Town Sports A 1 (Mere won 17-1 on aggregate)

WITH a 9-0 lead from the first leg, Mere Town set about total demoralising Frome Town Sports A in the second leg.

By half-time Mere held a 14-0 aggregate lead. Doug Buck began the scoring before Richard Dickinson grabbed a hat-trick and a Tommy Read penalty secured the score line at 5-0.

The second half saw Frome pull a goal back, but Mere continued to dominate as they scored a further three goals, from Dean Haskett, Scott Talbot and Colin Parfitt, to make the score 8-1 on the day and 17-1 on aggregate.

The Lamb Inn 6, Hilperton United 2 (The Lamb win 7-5 on aggregate)

HOLDING a 3-1 lead from the first leg, Hilperton found the second leg a lot harder as The Lamb were determined not to be knocked out.

Both teams started out at a fast pace with the game being played end to end and chances going begging.

The first goal eventually came after 29 minutes from a move down The Lamb's left wing and a shot from Mark Williams which beat Simon Hardwick in the Hilperton goal.

Eight minutes after the restart the Lamb levelled the aggregate score as Robin Walker pounced on a Hilperton defensive error. Mark Williams then completed the turn around some four minutes later to give the hosts the lead.

Stunned into action Hilperton scored a goal through substitute Mark Burrell after 63 minutes.

With Hilperton still celebrating the goal, The Lamb regained the lead as Jason Twigg cut through the defence like a hot knife through butter to give goalkeeper Hardwick no chance.

The game then settled down for a period of four minutes before yet another goal was scored, Mark Burrell grabbing his second to tie the scores yet again, this time at 5-5.

A devastating six minute spell then saw Hilperton dumped out of the cup as Damien Hateley grabbed two goals; his first after 73 minutes and his second after 79.

The last ten minutes saw Hilperton pile forward in search of goals but they were unable to beat Paul Farion in the Lamb goal.

Westbury United A 1, Heytesbury 0 (1-1 on aggregate. Westbury won 5-3 on penalties)

HEYTESBURY travelled to Westbury holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg which they held onto until midway through the second half of the second leg.

Adam McMackin then scored Westbury's all important goal.

With the match tied at the end of 90 minutes, extra-time was played, but there was no breakthrough.

The outcome of the match came down to the dreaded penalty shoot-out, Westbury going through by five penalties to three.
