Trowbridge Wanderers win Spring Cup
Trowbridge Wanderers celebrate their Spring Cup final victory last night (34515/1)
Trowbridge Wanderers celebrate their Spring Cup final victory last night (34515/1)

Bromham Reserves 1, Trowbridge Wanderers 2

Trowbridge Wanderers won the first silverware of the season in the Bradfords Building Supplies Trowbridge League with a narrow victory in last night's AM Print and Copy-sponsored Spring Cup final at Chippenham Town's ground.

The opening ten minutes saw both teams have chances to score but the defences remained intact.

The deadlock was broken after 12 minutes when Tom Slater opened the scoring for Bromham.

Bromham then started to dominate the play and after 17 minutes a blistering shot from Jason Cole went just wide. Seven minutes later it was Slater's turn to put a shot wide, with Cole screaming for the ball as he was in a better position to score.

After 26 minutes referee Mr Dawson produced the first two cards of the game, with Rob Sandiford (Bromham) and Rob Houkes (Wanderers) going into his book for unsportsmanlike behaviour.

A minute later the half turned for Trowbridge as they were awarded a penalty for hand ball. The kick was duly dispatched by Nigel Penelhum to make it 1-1. Some six minutes later Bromham's Danny Powell found himself on the end of a yellow card for what seemed like dissent.

Tom Slater missed a glorious chance after 34 minutes to restore the lead, his shot saved by Wanderers keeper Liam Newble. With four minutes to go to the interval Bromham missed yet another chance to score, this time it was Ali Bradley which meant it finished 1-1 at half-time.

The second half started as the first had finished with Bromham missing a chance, Jason Cole putting his shot wide. Four minutes later Cole's 20 yard free kick went wide.

After 52 minutes Tom Slater shot wide and he then hit the bar from 10 yards out a minute later.

With Bromham dominating play Mike Trigo saw his 56th minute shot tipped over the bar by Liam Newble and then Slater's shot from the resulting corner was also saved.

A minute later Wanderers James Harman found his way into the referee's note book.

Wanderers made the first substitution after 62 minutes, with Jamie Moth replacing Paul Reynolds.

With their first major assault of the second half Nigel Penelhum grabbed his second goal of the match after a game of pinball inside the Bromham box in the 63rd minute.

Bromham then made their first substitution after 68 minutes, with Anthony Butler on for Mike Trigo. Four minutes later Jason Cole saw his header from a free kick tipped over the bar by man-of-the-match Liam Newble for a corner which came to nothing.

With 13 minutes to go Wanderers made a second substitution, with Matt Tayler on for Dave Thomas and with ten minutes left Charlie Heydon became player number five in the referee's book.

Six minutes from the end Bromham brought on Dean Rudman and a minute later Newble pulled off the save of the match from a shot from point blank range.

The rebound was then put wide.

With four minutes left Wanderers made their final substitution, with Chris Penelhum on for two goal hero Nigel Penelhum.

With a minute left Bromham make a substitution, Ben Dowson on for Jack Fisher, but it was not enough to affect the outcome as Wanderers held on for a 2-1 win.
