IT was a real shame to lose out against Herefordshire because we played particularly well.

Losing the toss was probably very significant because, in truth, neither side knew how the wicket would play. They won it and made the right decision.

We had a bit of a deficit after the first innings and lacked a bit of punch in the field during their second innings.

If they posted a target of between 420 and 450, I said we would go for it and, as it transpired, it was a very fair declaration and we had a really good crack at it.

With a few more runs at the top of the order, we would have had a very good chance of winning.

As it was, Michael Coles’ knock was a phenomenal effort and it was a bit of a shame he didn’t get another double hundred.

He was worried about the team and trying to win for them, rather than going for personal glory.

Adam Miles also batted extremely well and was unlucky not to get a ton.

Adam’s playing with Cardiff, but his wicketkeeping stands up for itself and he just needed a few more runs in his locker.

Despite our lack of wins this season, we’ll reflect on some good performances.

We probably could have won two or three of the games, but lacked that killer instinct in the second innings.

You have to be prepared to lose a game to try to win it – as Herefordshire showed with their declaration.

But we’ll regroup over the winter. A couple of players from South Wilts have shown an interest in playing next year and it’s important to have people playing a high standard of cricket if they are going to play in the Minor Counties.
