MICHAEL Coles hopes his wealth of cricketing experience can help to lead a revival of the Wiltshire team after being reappointed county skipper for 2014.

All-rounder Coles has returned to the role he departed in 2010 after Joe Breet, who will continue as a player, stood down after three years at the end of this summer.

After their most successful season in years in 2012, when they reached the final of the MCCA Trophy and finished third in the Minor Counties Championship Western Division, a young Wiltshire squad failed to win any of their competitive matches this summer.

Coles said: “There is a good bunch of youngsters there and one of the things I want to do is to lead by example and hopefully help their development a bit.

“I said to Neil (Shardlow, team manager) I was keen on taking it on again and we’ve certainly got the nucleus of a good team.

“I’m really pleased to be doing it again and hopefully, we can get everyone pulling in the right direction.’’

Earlier this month, it was revealed Coles will also return to Corsham, for whom he played between 2006-08, to play in the West of England Premier League.

Coles, who gave up the county captaincy three years ago because of business commitments, led Bridgwater to the West of England Premier League title in 2012.

The powerful right-handeder and medium seam bowler was the WEPL’s leading run scorer in 2013 with 826 at an average of 51 and added 18 wickets.

He smashed 221 not out for Wiltshire against Shropshire in June – the highest total ever by a Wiltshire batsman in the Minor Counties Championship and hit an unbeaten 185 off 163 balls against Herefordshire.
