HINDSIGHT left a sour taste for Corsham captain Pete Dennett as his side missed out on the opportunity to climb up the Premier One table last weekend.

Corsham’s top-four rivals Frocester and Taunton Deane both suffered defeats last weekend but Dennett’s men were unable to take advantage as they crumbled to a miserable 192-run loss at second-placed Downend.

The Station Road skipper admitted his side, who had won their last four games, suffered an off-day as they failed to apply themselves with the bat.

“It was a very disappointing day – most of the sides around us lost and we could have even gone top if we’d won last weekend but we didn’t know that going into the game,” said Dennett.

“300 isn’t much more than a par score at Downend because it’s a small ground and we didn’t go off for tea upset or anything like that.

“But we just didn’t chase the score well at all. It seemed like we were trying to knock the runs off in 25 overs, rather than building partnerships and carrying a good score into the second half of the innings. It was really out of character for us and it was just one of those days.”

Hosts Downend opted to bat first after winning the toss and posted a sizeable 312-6, thanks to the efforts of Callum Loud (85 not out), Michael Bracewell (59) and Curtis Blakemore (54).

Corsham then crumbled, with Ashur Morrison grabbing the visitors’ highest total with just 25.

Downend’s Phil Jackson ended with 4-14 while Philip Allen also claimed four wickets as Corsham were out for just 120 early in the 28th over.

  • POTTERNE’S batsmen were again in bludgeoning form as the villagers charged on in Wadworth 6X West of England League Glos/Wilts Division (2nd XI) with a huge derby success over Biddestone.

Jamie Hayes hit a magnificent 208 not out off 108 balls, featuring 16 fours and 16 sixes and Clyde Williams added 122 from 129 balls in their side’s mammoth 401-3.

Hayes has now scored 871 in just 12 matches at an average of 174.2.

Biddestone were dismissed for 183 in reply, Chris Casey with 55 and Matt Unwin adding 46 as Peter Mathias took 3-22.

Struggling Chippenham slipped to a 111-run defeat at home to title-chasing Chipping Sodbury, who reached 255-4 in their 45 overs, the Chippenham reply being ended on 144.

Marlborough had the better of their county derby against Trowbridge, prevailing by 46 runs.

The visitors reached 226-9, Raghuveer Tupurani scoring 52 as Trowbridge’s Josh Fossey took 3-44.

Chris Fardell hit 50 in the reply, but they came up short on 180-9 as Rob Atkinson and Tupurani both claimed three wickets.

Corsham maintained their interest in the Premier One 2nd XI league battle with a 28-run win over Keynsham at Station Road.

Sayeed Ibrahim hit an unbeaten 67 in the home side’s 229-9 before Will Collier’s 3-44 helped end the Keynsham innings at 201-8.

In Premier Two (2nd XI), Goatacre’s title chances took a hit as they lost out to Thornbury.

Thornbury’s 385-5 proved too big a mountain to climb for the visitors, despite   Chapman scoring 61 in 264-9.

Wayne Pascall scored 78 and Alistair Christie 49 as Wiltshire Division (2nd XI) leaders Marshfield (281-5 declared) put struggling Calne to the sword by 174 runs.

Ben White took 6-23 as Calne were all out for 107.

Great Bedwyn were 202-run winners over Devizes, Joe Blundy finishing unbeaten on 143 and Daniel Swatton adding 41 in their 307-7.

Devizes’ Mark Webb took 3-54 but their reply ended at 105, Jamie Robinson with 4-28 and Lewis Robinson with 3-27.

Nationwide House (214-6) had too much for Burbage & Easton Royal, who missed out by seven runs despite 61 from Nick Patel.
