ASHUR Morrison is relishing his first year at the helm of Corsham after taking over the captaincy reins at the Premier One club.

The 26-year-old bowler was named as the Station Road skipper back in December and replaces Pete Dennett, who has left the country to work abroad.

With Morrison targeting a top-four finish in the West of England Premier League’s top division, the Wiltshire county player knows that the side have to be more consistent this term.

“I want us to improve on last year, where we picked up seven victories - we had a four-game unbeaten run too,” he said. “I’m looking for us to crack that top four.

“Last year, we beat the likes of Bath and Frocester - they went on to contest the title - but then we lost to the likes of Weston-super-Mare and they were relegated. We have got more than enough to challenge but we need to show more consistency.”

Morrison admits that it will be unlikely that they will have an overseas player on board for Saturday’s visit of Downend, who finished fourth last term - two places above the Station Road side.

“Hopefully we should have some news on an overseas player in the next couple of weeks,” the Corsham captain said. “In an ideal world, we would have one in time for Saturday but that isn’t going to be the case.

“We are looking at bringing in a top-order batsman because I think it would be beneficial for us to have that little extra experience.

“The Downend match is going to be tough. They have beaten us a few times over the last few years but we are looking forward to the new season.”

Corsham have also drafted in Ian Dixon, a top-four batsman in the Army side last year, as well as having Nick Harrison return to the club following his release from Worcestershire.

“It is not just quality that we have added to the squad but experience too because we are quite a young side,” said the skipper, who is in his fifth season at Station Road.

“This is my first year as captain and I’m extremely proud of that - I’m only 26.

“I’m looking forward to the challenges that will be coming my way.”
