WARMINSTER skipper Tom Davie is hoping his side can build on their promising start to the season after they made it two wins from two with a comfortable victory over Frenchay last weekend.

The Sambourne Road outfit, who opened up their Glos/Wilts Division campaign with a six-run victory at Apperley, triumphed by a more comfortable margin last Saturday, seeing off Frenchay by 99 runs.

Warminster’s early-season 100 per cent record sees them top the table but captain Davie is keen to keep his players’ feet on the ground.

“It’s been a very good start to the season. Normally, we have slow starts to seasons but we’ve won our first two this time,” said Davie.

“In both of our games, we’ve set good totals and then, with some good bowling, we’ve got the other team out.

“We had a good pre-season and it’s good to see some young players getting in to the team, performing well and staying there.

“We’ve won two out of two and we’ve started well but we need to try and take every game as it comes.

“Last season, we had a bit of a consolidation year because it was the first season after being relegated.

“We want to try and go for that top spot but there’s no point looking at the league table until it matters.

“We have to try and take every game as it comes – that’s the important thing.”

Warminster won the toss and chose to bat first, with opener Ankit Shastri adding some early impetus with a knock of 52 from 48 deliveries.

James LeWorthy added 45 whilst Tristan Lundqvist (39), Pete Hickerton (23) and David Bateman (23 not out) were also amongst the runs.

Frenchay’s Eddie Williams took 3-36 but he was unable to halt the hosts’ charge, with Davie’s men posting 238-7.

The visitors’ Mike Donaldson looked to get their run-chase off the ground with a knock of 52 but he was one of three wickets to fall to Graham Cuthbertson, who ended the afternoon with figures of 3-29.

Frenchay’s Matt Taylor (31 not out) and Williams (28) also offered up some resistance but the rest of the away side’s order crumbled, failing to reach double figures.

Shastri was chief antagonist, claiming four wickets for 35 runs whilst Rory Cullian took 2-17 as Frenchay were dismissed for 139 after 39 overs.

Warminster host county rivals Chippenham on Saturday.
