WILTSHIRE team manager Neil Shardlow says his team will not be doing too much soul-searching after being eliminated from the Unicorns Knockout Trophy.

Shardlow’s charges finished the group stage with a 46-run victory over Devon at Warminster on Sunday but it was not enough to secure them a place in the quarter-finals.

Defeat against Wales in the first match of the summer is what ultimately prevented Wiltshire from progressing to the latter stages, but they have remained unbeaten since and that has given Shardlow plenty of reason to stay upbeat.

“We’re disappointed not to go through as that was our goal going into the competition,” said Shardlow.

“But I’ve spoken to (captain) Michael Coles since and we were agreed that it was a very good team performance against Devon. That is something we have been lacking in the season so far.

“It’s not like we are coming off a defeat, it was a good performance and we have to look to take the positives from that game.”

Wiltshire now have a weekend off but will soon turn their attentions to the inaugural Unicorns T20 competition, which sees them swiftly resume battle against Devon on Sunday May 31.

Having picked up a win against the same opposition so recently. Shardlow says he does not plan to change his approach for that clash.

“We have got one up on them so we will face them with a positive mindset,” said Shardlow.

“But we know Devon are a strong team and it is going to be another tough game against them.

“We could be down there all day or be on our way home by lunchtime. We’ll go there with the attitude of let’s go down to win it and be down all day by the seaside.

“We will have to think about our side, but it will probably be much the same that played them last time. I don’t envisage too many changes unless there are problems with availability.

“It’s a weekend off for us, but the guys have all got club games this weekend so hopefully they can come back rejuvenated for when we come back together.

“We haven’t really played that much of 20-overs cricket so we will just go out and enjoy it, be positive and try to impose ourselves on them.

“It’s not that difficult to change our approach from 50-overs to 20-overs, it’s just that there’s a little bit more of an acceleration in the innings.

“It will be the following week when we go from 50-overs to 20-overs then to 90-overs and a three-day game. That’s when it changes and the emphasis of the gameplan changes as well.”
