WINSLEY captain Kevin Hendy has said his side are 10 per cent away from being at their best as they fell to a four-wicket defeat away to Great Bedwyn.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Winsley set a below par score of 184 all out, with two overs left.

Simon Norris (44) top scored for the visitors as Rob Palmer (4-37) and Max Andrews (3-16) ensured that none of the Winsley batsman were able to convert once getting in.

In reply the hosts were able to chase down the target with just over 10 overs still in hand as Rob Palmer (39) continued with the bat where he left off with the ball.

“I think we are doing 90 per cent of everything right and then it is the final 10 per cent which is the difference between winning and losing,” said Hendy.

“We are, as I said at the beginning of the season, looking to bring the youth through and I had three players on Saturday who were under 17.

“They all played an active role in the game and it is going to be a case of where the senior players have to step up to the plate a little bit more.

“On what was a tricky wicket we should have posted really a score of 220, which would have been enough to win. Bedwyn bowled reasonably well, they managed the run chase extremely well and were deserved winners.”

The defeat was the sides third in their opening five games but Hendy is not pressing the panic button yet, with the five sides above them in the Wiltshire Division all with very similar records.

Winsley now face Marshfield, who sit three places above with three wins and two defeats, and Hendy says that the spirit in the side remains high.

“We need to raise our game by 10 or 15 per cent going forward,” he added. “If you look at the league we are not unique in those stats. Everybody appears to have won two and lost three or won three and lost two, with the exception of Trowbridge, who have now lost their overseas player for the season.

“Everybody has roughly the same type of profile and I think that anybody can beat anybody with the exception of poor old Malmesbury who are finding it exceptionally tough in this league.

“Despite the results the mood in the camp is very buoyant and the team spirit is fantastic. Everybody is disappointed that people have had starts and not gone on and it is just a case of maintaining that spirit on the pitch and playing with a smile on our face.”

Meanwhile, Westbury completed a nine-wicket victory over bottom side Malmesbury.

The visitors won the toss and batted but it didn’t take long for Westbury to skittle them out for just 61 in 21 overs, Andy Carroll (4-19) and Richard Oakley (3-6) doing the damage.

Westbury reached their target inside 11 overs as Rickard Mills was the only wicket to fall.

Trowbridge lost their first game of the season, a 83-run defeat to Marshfield.
