WESTBURY skipper Alex Senneck is hoping that his side’s promising run of form can provide the perfect springboard for an assault on the Wiltshire Division title.

Senneck’s men racked up their third win in a row with victory at near-neighbours Trowbridge last weekend, leapfrogging the County Ground outfit into second in the table.

That result was Westbury’s fourth win of the season since their opening day defeat of league leaders Marlborough and their captain thinks that things could be clicking into place for the Wellhead Lane side.

“We had a good win over Marlborough in the first game of the season and even though we lost two in a row, we’ve now won three in a row and have got a bit of momentum,” said Senneck.

“We’re only six games into the season and there are still two thirds to go. Ourselves, Marlborough, Trowbridge and Marshfield are all in similar positions.

“Our form is good and hopefully we’re in a position where we can go for the upper echelons of the league table later this season.

“It was a good win on Saturday, especially because Trowbridge won four games in a row at the start of the season.

“It was a competitive game, played in good spirit. From my experience of playing there for Wiltshire, I knew that it’s hard to chase scores on that wicket, so we wanted to bat first and set a good total, which we did.”

Westbury did manage to bat first after winning the toss and opener Jared McDonald set the tone with a knock of 67.

Skipper Senneck also made 67 whilst Tom Lucas weighed in with 28, with 38 extras contributing to the visitors posting 237-5, Trowbridge skipper Mikey Reynolds taking three wickets.

Westbury made early inroads with the ball, accounting for the hosts’ first three wickets for just 62 runs before Sam Julyan (61) offered up some resistance.

Richard Mills (3-43) was the pick of the visiting bowlers as Trowbridge were dismissed for 175 early in the 46th over.

Elsewhere, there was late heartbreak for Winsley as they suffered a narrow three-run defeat at home to Marshfield.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first but were put under immediate pressure by Winsley’s Ben Strange, who dismissed Marshfield’s first four batsmen for just 50 runs.

Calum Burnstone did add some impetus to the innings with a knock of 63 whilst tail-enders Ben Gardner (34) and Matt Watson (25*) also contributed.

Home captain Kevin Hendy took a further two wickets as Marshfield posted 217-8.

Alan Hewett spearheaded Winsley’s run chase with a fine knock of 74, whilst Miles Lloyd (40 from 17 balls), opener Simon Norris (28) and Nick Gerrish (29) also chipped in.

But the visiting bowlers did enough to steal a result, William Johnson taking (4-31) as Winsley were skittled for 214 in the penultimate over.
