TROWBRIDGE hauled themselves into the title race with a dramatic one-run win away at Calne.

They are now just seven points behind leaders Marlborough with eight games left to play.

The victory was built on some fine late bowling, with Calne seemingly on course to chase down Trowbridge’s 220 at 203-5.

However, excellent death bowling from Sam Julyan (3-44) and Mike Reynolds (3-39) induced a late collapse, with Calne finishing agonisingly all out on 219.

Reynolds (62) and Julyan (54) had earlier been the backbone of the Trowbridge innings.

Trowbirdge club captain Scott Mitchell said: “Mike and Sam both had two terrific knocks for us again, and Stuart Edginton (21) chipped in as well.

“We were aiming for about 280, or maybe even a bit more but we had a bit of a collapse. I still thought 220 was a reasonable score and one we could defend.

“We took a few early wickets and that got us on the up but a couple of us didn’t bowl well and they got back into it, and I think team spirit is what got us through.

“Sam showed real maturity at the end and the last five overs were superb.

“We were looking like we weren’t going to do it but we kept believing in ourselves.

“Maybe Calne deserved to win but if you are going to play badly and still get the result it shows we have got a lot of talent in this side.”

Trowbridge were able to leapfrog Westbury & District after they went down by 61 runs in their top-of-the-table clash against leaders Marlborough.

A valiant 52 from skipper Arran Dickinson formed the backbone of the Marlborough innings as they posted 201-8. Westbury skipper Alex Senneck led the charge with the ball, returning figures of 3-27.

Although faced with a chasable target, the Westbury reply simply never got going and only Lydon Gibbons (49) and tail-ender Andy Carroll (32) came out with much credit as they were dismissed for 140.

George Fox and Bradley Frost claimed three wickets apiece for Marlborough.

Simon Orchard’s 5-55 was in vain for Winsley as they fell to a six-run defeat at Malmesbury.

Michael Collison scored 94 as the home side posted 275 all out and although James Hewitt and Alain Neale hit half-centuries in reply, the Winsley run chase was still short by the time their 50 overs had been completed, with the visitors finishing on 269-8.
