THE weather played a big part in our latest Unicorns Championship Western Division game away at Wales and having the middle day totally rained off, and a number of showers on day three, caused no end of problems in regards to trying to manufacture a result.

We were a little bit disappointed because I think we did everything we could to try to manufacture a result but I don’t think Wales did.

We forfeited our first innings and any chance of any batting points because we had to make the decision of do we try to get an outright win? That’s why we are a little bit disappointed.

Our understanding was that they were going to set us 285 off 70 overs but they kept batting and set us 334 off just over 60.

That’s a tough ask on a slow wicket anyway and then once we tried to go for the runs, every time we hit a four they put a man out. In the end they had five men on the boundary. We were going for a big score and there was no way we were going to get it.

We had a go at it but just felt they were a little bit negative. There may be reasons for that and they haven’t won a game at all in the three-day competition.

It’s difficult when you’re in that habit and sometimes you don’t necessarily know how to go about getting a win.

In my experience you have to be prepared to lose the game to actually win it. In three-day cricket you have to dangle the carrot but if you bowl well sometimes it falls in your favour.

I understand that sometimes things change and the weather was always going to play a factor but at the point where we were looking for them to declare it was fine.

It got to a point where I said to the lads I am not prepared to let them win as I don’t think they have been particularly fair. I left there thinking it was a bit of an anti-climax but that’s gone now.

We have got two home games left and the target is to win both. If we can finish with three wins from the season that’s still a good achievement.

We have six days of cricket left and hopefully it is six days where we don’t have as much rain as we did in Wales.
