TROWBRIDGE’S title chase suffered a setback as they were beaten by 54 runs on their trip to local rivals Westbury.

Mikey Reynolds’ men had put themselves on the brink of lifting the crown with a run of eight straight victories dating back to the first week of June - and the last time they played Westbury.

Although Trowbridge remain favourites for honours as they still have a hefty 21-point cushion on second-placed Marlborough, the final three games will now be much more nervy than they could have been.

Westbury themselves are back in with a sniff of stealing the silverware, as they are just a further seven points adrift back in third place.

The visitors looked in good shape as they had both Westbury openers Richard Mills and Jared McDonald back in the hutch with just 31 on the board, however, that saw home captain Alex Senneck come to the crease and he swiftly took the game away from Trowbridge.

Senneck laid siege to the visiting attack and had plundered his way to a brilliant unbeaten 131 by the time the innings came to a close.

Lydon Gibbons (44) and Dan Gill (31) provided good support as Westbury posted 266-6 from their 50 overs.

The wickets were shared around for Trowbridge, with Dan Tellentire, Luke Seymour and Sam Julyan picking up two apiece.

Senneck made an early inroad in the visitors reply, with John Carroll out.

However, Reynolds (48) and number three Julyan (82) then led a fightback as a stand of 110 looked to have swung momentum Trowbridge’s way.

They could not sustain that, though, and once skipper Reynolds was dismissed it kicked off the fall of six wickets for less than 50 runs as Westbury began to take control.

Stephen Johnson (38) tried to steady the ship again but found no one willing to hang around long enough with him, as the visitors’ innings eventually closed on 212-9.

Martin Dolman led the home attack, taking 3-31, while there were two wickets each for Richard Oakley and Tom Lucas.

At the other end of the table, Winsley were unable to extend their revival into a second week as they lost by 125 runs away at Marshfield.

Kevin Hendy’s strugglers had given themselves hope of beating the drop with a win over Great Bedwyn last week but are now 17 points adrift of safety.

Batting first, all of Marshfield’s top seven batsmen made contributions as they set a target of 293-6.

Jeremy Bond top scored with 56 and there was also a half-century for James Williams, while Benjamin Strange and Peter Orchard took two wickets apiece for Marshfield.

The visitors never got going in reply as a good opening spell from Thomas Lamb (2-29) had them at 11-2, while more good bowling from Cameron Walker (3-32), Tom Clist (2-20) and William Pascall (2-36) saw them slip to 70-7.

At that point Nick Gerrish (61) and skipper Hendy (43) came toeether and finally provided some resistance but it could not last and Winsley were finally dismissed for 168.
