WILTSHIRE’S James Vince says his call-up to the England Test squad is a dream come true.

The former Chippenham and Warminster club cricketer, from Steeple Ashton, was expected to be given the nod by head coach Trevor Bayliss this morning as England got their summer underway with the first Test against Sri Lanka at Headingley.

The 25-year-old, who will have his parents Paul and Sue, as well as his partner Amy, in Leeds this week, has been brought in for James Taylor following his shock retirement earlier this year on health grounds.

Vince, who has been captain of England Lions for the past two seasons, as well as also taking on the captaincy at Hampshire this term, arrived in Yorkshire on Monday night.

The former Wiltshire cricketer, who has made one one-day international appearance for England, as well as winning four T20 caps, said: “It is a bit different to being involved with the one-day and the T20 set-up.

“There is a little bit more meaning I suppose and something that I have been working towards since I was a boy.”

When Vince received the call that he would be in the first Test squad, he was with Hampshire up in Manchester for their Specsavers County Championship Division One match against Lancashire.

While it had been hinted that Vince would be selected, he admits that until the call came, it was a surprise.

“Until you get the call, you never know, do you?” said Vince, who has scored 275 runs at 39.28 this season for Hampshire, including his 119 against Yorkshire at Headingley last month.

“It did take a little while for it all to sink in, but when you’ve got a four-hour drive home from Manchester, there is plenty of time to get your head around it.

“Now that it is here, it is a dream come true.”

Upon his arrival in Yorkshire, Vince attended the England annual awards on Monday night before his first training session on Tuesday afternoon.

However, the former Warminster School pupil said that days of sharing rooms while with England are a thing of the past.

“I don’t know what it used to be like, but we all have our own rooms now,” said Vince, who also played football for Trowbridge Town as a teenager.

“It was good to get my first session under my belt on Tuesday before having a couple more ahead of the match.”
