CAPTAIN Ashur Morrison described Corsham’s tied match with second-placed Bath as a ‘crazy game’.

In limited overs cricket it is rare for the two sides to finish with the same amount of runs, but what happened in the final over of the hosts’ innings was even more special.

With Corsham finding the two-paced pitch tough, opener Steve Bullen hitting a watchful 71, they headed into the 50th over on 212-5 and former Wiltshire skipper Michael Coles on 67 runs from 66 balls, having hit four fours and five sixes.

While what happened next was not quite of Gary Sobers’ vintage - the West Indies all-rounder hit six sixes in an over for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan at Swansea in 1968 - it was still a fine feat.

Coles proceeded to crack five sixes and run two with Bath also delivering a wide to propel the Station Road men up to 245-5, with the 34-year-old finishing one shy of his century.

Bath’s reply to the Corsham innings got off to a fine start as George Hankins and Tim Rouse shared an opening wicket stand of 78.

However, from 78-0 the hosts quickly reduced Bath to 115-5 before Harry Rouse steadied the ship for the visitors.

The middle-order batsman went on to score a 74-ball 63 before Bath attempted to scramble the winning runs off the final ball only for Adam Kelly to be run out for four by Sam Collier to leave visitors stranded on 245-9.

“It was a crazy game,” said Morrison. “(At) one stage we were looking like we were in a position to win the match and then they were.

“It was a really tough wicket to bat on. It was quiet two-paced and at times, as is the case at Corsham, it was slow and low.

“Steve Bullen played a very good anchor innings and that fine over from Mike Coles was very special.”
