ROYAL Wootton Bassett captain Darren Beasant is delighted the wait is finally over after his team claimed the Division One title.

Bassett’s triumph was confirmed after the weather intervened to force off their decider against runners-up Bear Flat on Saturday, handing them a return to the West of England Premier League they last graced in 2012.

Beasant, whose side narrowly missed out on promotion in each of the last three seasons, said: “On a couple of occasions we’ve been in some good positions with a few games to go and we’ve managed to make a mess of it.

“We were a little bit frustrated being the perennial bridesmaids so I’m glad we finally managed to get it over the line.

“The difference this year is we’ve grown up a little bit, the players are more mature and have more experience.’’ Bear Flat should follow Bassett into the WEPL, while Beckington and Hinton Charterhouse were relegated from the top division.

The final day of the campaign was wiped out by the weather, with Avebury and Winsley gaining promotion to Division One, while Swindon United Churches and Beanacre & Melksham filled the bottom two places in Division Two.

Champions Bath Hospitals and Swindon A are expected to step up to Division Two, with Heytesbury and Sutton Veny and Bassett’s second string propping up the rest in Division Three and unable to beat the drop.

Chippenham 2nd and Goatacre 2nd will be promoted to Division Three, with Buscot Park and Corsham 3rd in the bottom two spots in Division Four.

Chippenham 3rd were crowned champions in Division Five, with Burbage & Easton Royal 3rd already confirmed as Division Six winners and their second team doing likewise in Division Seven, ahead of their Purton counterparts.

Highworth had already wrapped up the honours in Division Eight, while Chippenham 4th clinched the crown in Division Nine.
