POTTERNE have made a good start in trying to meet one of their targets in Premier One this year.

After making their debut in the top flight of the West of England Premier League last season, Neil Clark’s men were only able to win one match at their Grove base –beating a Taunton team who were relegated at the end of the term.

Despite finishing fourth in their debut campaign, Potterne were determined to improve their home record this year and they made the perfect start into achieving that goal as they defeated Bristol by six wickets at The Grove.

Potterne won the toss and invited their visitors to bat first and Dylan Higgins (4-60) and Jake Roberts (1-42) quickly set about removing the Bristol top order.

However, Clark’s side found some resistance in the shape of opener Fin Trenouth (48) and former Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and Wiltshire all-rounder Roger Sillence (61).

Bristol, who at one stage were 57-4, were eventually bowled out for 206 in the 34th over.

In reply, Potterne never looked in trouble as Tom Cullen (35) and Joshua Da Souza (61) put on an opening wicket stand of 78.

Sahan Wijerathne then chipped in with a 29-ball 37, before skipper Clark was bowled first ball, while Wiltshire captain Ed Young blasted his way to an unbeaten 49 to see the hosts home.

“It was a solid start for us,” said Young, who 24 hours later captained the county to a 122-run success over a Bedfordshire team containing former England spinner Monty Panesar in the Unicorns Knockout Trophy.

“To bowl any side out for 206 at Potterne is a good effort. Then we kicked on with the bat.

“The biggest thing last year was that we only won one match at home.

“I know that we finished fourth and that was done by only winning one match at home, so the aim this year is to win more of our home games.”
