WESTBURY maintained their unbeaten start to the season in Premier Two Glos/Wilts after defeating Gloucester City Winget by five wickets on Saturday.

Alex Senneck’s side have enjoyed a superb start to the season, with three wins and one game abandoned in their opening four fixtures.

The hosts, who sit second in the table, won the toss and elected to field and Andy Carroll made an early breakthrough against Winget as he dismissed Paul Clarke for a six-ball duck.

The visitors then repaired the damage as Tom Collinson and Jack Cowles (11) put on 47 for the second wicket before the latter fell to Richard Mills.

Collinson went on to hit 61 for Winget however, Westbury were able to rip through a long tail as their visitors slumped from 134-3 to 173 all out with Senneck the pick of the attack with 4-32.

In reply, Westbury calmly set about meeting their target with the skipper again being the stand-out performer as he struck a patient 52 before being run out.

The hosts also enjoyed some useful contributions from openers James Hudson (24) and Mike Coles (34), while Arran Dickinson was unbeaten on 31 as the Wellhead Lane side secured the win in the 45th over.

“It was a fairly decent win and there was a bit of weather around but we took full advantage of that and kept them down to a decent score,” said Senneck.

“We knocked them off for five so I was pleased to come away with the win.

“We’re happy with our start to the season, but acutely aware that our three wins have come from teams towards the bottom of the table.”

Following the victory, Westbury will have a chance to hit the summit on Saturday when they make the trip to the table-toppers Cheltenham.

“I see it as a test because Cheltenham have been there or thereabouts in this league for the past couple of years,” he added. “It is a good opportunity to see where we are as a team and as a squad.”
