Wiltshire lose grip on Marlborough Cup

WILTSHIRE lost their grip on the Marlborough Cup when they were beaten by nine runs by neighbours Berkshire in their annual warm-up match at Devizes.

Put in to bat, Berkshire made a brisk start to their innings on Sunday, but Wiltshire rallied in the dying overs and were satisfied to restrict their visitors to 239-9. Mitchell Stokes top scored with 97 and David Barnes made 40.

Medium pacer Damian Shirazi was Wiltshire's most successful bowler with 4 for 28 and there was a wicket apiece for James Hibberd, Tom Hankins and debutant off-spinner Rob Travers.

In reply Wiltshire were always in the game but lost wickets at vital times, with five batsmen reaching 20 but none going on to score 50 and finished with 230 for 8.

Damian Shirazi scored 47, Jayden Levitt 35, Roger Sillence 23, Michael Coles 30 and James Hibberd 34.

Former Gloucestershire and Worcestershire all-rounder Sillence threw his wicket away with a careless reverse sweep.

Hibberd and Michael Coles then came together at the crease and looked to be guiding the hosts to victory until both fell in quick succession.

Wiltshire closed on 226-8 after 50 overs, as they failed to defend the trophy they have held for the past two years. For Berkshire Carl Crowe took 4 for 26.
