Corsham good enough to win title, says Coles
Michael Coles
Michael Coles

CORSHAM captain Michael Coles believes his team can win the Premier One title this season.

Coles issued the rallying cry after Corsham gained a winning draw at defending champions Frocester in their opening match of the season on Saturday.

But the skipper says there is a long way to go before his team can start seriously thinking about the prospect.

Coles said: "If we play to our potential we can win the league. We've got a good enough squad this year but I'm not going to say it's a foregone conclusion.

"We just need to take each game as it comes and not worry about what everyone else is doing.

"Frocester won the league last year so they are a decent outfit, but it's the beginning of the season so we're not going to get carried away."

While he was pleased with how his team played, Coles wants heavier scoring from his top order next time out.

Coles said: "It was a good performance but we were struggling at one stage and a good partnership between Dan Collier and Alex Senneck got us up to a decent target.

"We needed to take a bit more responsibility from batters one to five. Take the lower order's runs out of it and we're down to a lower score.

"I think it's a case of showing a bit more discipline. A couple of guys got themselves out with their shot selection.

"It's gone in and been logged and hopefully it will change for this weekend."

The Corsham skipper said the quality of his team's bowling played a key part in the victory.

Coles said: "We bowled really well. The ball was swinging a lot for the first 15 or 20 overs and it was difficult for them to get it away. I think we won it in the first 15 or 20 overs."

Senneck, Roger Sillence and Richard Foley took two wickets each and Thomas Hankins got the other as Corsham dismissed seven Frocester batsmen.

Senneck had earlier top-scored for Corsham with the bat as he cracked 68 off 50 balls.

Sillence (31), Neil Shardlow (25) and Collier (30) hit useful knocks to give Corsham a comfortable advantage.
