Middle order collapses on lively wicket
Jacques Prinsloo

A MIDDLE order collapse proved Westbury's downfall as they slumped to a 40-run defeat at Keynsham.

The match began well for Ben Whiting's side as they won the toss and dismissed nine batsmen for 173, with Jacques Prinsloo taking 5-46 and Matthew Milton 4-47.

Joe Breet and Jon Dilena were out fairly early on in the Westbury innings but the visitors were still in the game at 50-2.

But disaster struck when Alex Hart, Matthew Milton, Sayeed Ibrahim and captain Whiting went for the loss of just 19 runs.

Despite a brave stand of 25 from Martin Dolman, Westbury never recovered and were all out for 133 off 43 overs.

Keynsham's Richard Pannell had a superb afternoon, claiming five wickets and two catches, while Dave Burston took five wickets and one catch.

Skipper Whiting said his team's problems started when they came to the crease.

Whiting said: "We did quite well with the ball and I'd settle for 170 every week, but batting-wise we were poor, no one got stuck into it.

"It was quite a lively track to bowl on but when we came round to batting it wasn't half as bad.

"We've got a lot of good players in the top order but nobody actually produced.

"They weren't any better than us, we just had a bad day at the office with the bat.

"There was no conviction, it was a game we should have won and we lost.

"But it was good to lose because we'll come back stronger next week.

"It should sort out our problems, we know where we went wrong."
