WILTSHIRE LEAGUE: Youth stunned by comeback

IN THE Premier Division, FC Chippenham Youth were leading 4-1 at Wroughton until midway through the second half when the home side brought on sub Chris Rees, writes RAY BURROUGHS.

He hit a quick-fire hat-trick inside 10 minutes to salvage a point for the home outfit.

Earlier, Luke Holborough had given the visitors an early lead, cancelled out by a spot kick from Wroughton’s Tom Steptoe.

Two further goals from Alex Horledge and another from Holborough gave Chippenham the advantage at the break with Josh Hodges adding a fourth soon after the restart.

In another incident-packed game, leaders New College defeated visitors Purton, who finished with eight men 3-1, with the College reduced to 10.

In a close first 45 minutes the side were separated by a strike from Levi Cox, who scrambled the ball over the line from a corner midway through the half.

After the interval Dave Rendle equalised for Purton and was sent off soon after, followed by two of his colleagues.

The College then had a player sent off before netting twice in the closing stages from Cox and John Rees.

College spokesman Eric Stott said: “It was never a dirty game. The referee booked several players in the first half for petty things and after the break when a few hefty tackles went in he was forced to brandish the red cards.”

Another official not on the Christmas card list was the referee who called off the Pewsey Vale game against Westbury United.

The home officials thought the Vale pitch was in good condition and held a training session on it after the game was postponed.

Corsham Town gained a 6-2 home victory over visitors Marlborough Town the visitors going in front with a strike five minutes into the game.

The home side fought back to lead 4-1 with two goals from Pete Tye and one each from Darren Legg and Ryan Bell.

After the break Tye completed his hat-trick, Marlborough pulled a goal back, Arran Merryweather added a sixth and the home side had Joel Moody sent off.

KC’s Club kept on the heels of the leaders with a 5-1 victory at Warminster, with the Swindon side's boss Dave Hawkins praising the home officials for their efforts in getting the game on.

Two goals from Arthur Levett and one each from Paul Hunt and Lee Hurd plus a second-half strike from Terry Moore gave the visitors a comfortable victory.

Devizes Town and Melksham shared the honours in a 1-1 draw, Sean Clements on target for Devizes and James Taylor for the visitors.

Calne Town got off to a good start in their Corsham Print Senior Cup tie against Bradford Town, John O’Meara scoring an equaliser to cancel out Tom Roony’s early goal for the visitors.

However, Bradford began to dominate the game and further goals from Nathan Gant and Rooney plus a second half strike by Mark Robinson gave them a place in the next round.

Also in the cup, Shrewton United proved too strong for Trowbridge Town, beating the visitors 4-0 thanks to a hat-trick from Craig Appleby.

His third was a cracking 25 yarder into the top corner. A Dan Jones header completed the scoring.
