Melksham spoil leaving party

HOT on the heels of their Wiltshire Senior Cup triumph, Melksham Town finished the season on a high as they picked up four points in their last two Toolstation League Premier Division games.

The club were faced with a difficult away fixture at Hallen on Saturday, which was Hallen manager Dave Mogg's last home game at the club.

Melksham came out on top, winning 2-1 to the delight of manager Kelvin Highmore.

Highmore said: "I was pleased with the performance and the way we played on Saturday.

"We only had two on the bench so we were a bit short on numbers and Shaun Bryant was in goal for Steve Perrin so I couldn't have asked anymore of the lads.

"Hallen wanted to win with their manager Dave Mogg leaving at the end of the season but we came and spoiled the party."

Ricky Trott opened the scoring on the hour mark with a header from a corner to make it 1-0.

After 70 minutes the Hallen goalkeeper came out to clear the ball, which fell straight to Shaun Benison near the halfway line.

Benison carried the ball forward several yards and hit a diagonal shot from 30 yards which flew into the top corner.

Hallen pulled one back late on but Highmore's men held on for a deserved victory.

Melksham's last game of the season was a home match against Somerset relegation battlers Chard Town on Monday evening.

The game ended 0-0 to secure Melksham 11th place in the Toolstation League Premier Division table.

Highmore said: "It was difficult on Monday night because we had won the Wiltshire Senior Cup and had finished mid-table so we had very little to play for, whereas Chard needed at least a point to try and stay up.

""They had more to play for than us and it showed through their application and work ethic.

"But to finish the season with a clean sheet and a point is great. We haven't lost in our last three games so there are positives to come out of the game."
