THE Bath & Wiltshire Romans are through to their first cup final as their stellar debut season continues.

The side, based at Rudloe’s Leafy Lane complex, defeated Somerset Vikings 58-28 in their West of England Premier League encounter that doubled up as the Challenge Cup semi final.

The Romans are also sitting on top of the league table ahead of Bristol Sonics and will now take on Cheltenham Phoenix in the West of England Challenge Cup Final at Dings Crusaders RFC in Bristol tomorrow (2.30pm).

The home side led 36-4 at half time against the Vikings after some breathtaking attacking play before a number of errors early in the second period allowed Somerset back into the game.

Loose forward Mike Roberts started the scoring after barging his way through the Vikings line on five minutes, wing Joe Knight converting.

Knight went over moments later before Roberts scored his second - a feat matched by Knight soon afterwards.

Olly Spence sprinted over from 20 metres for a try converted by George Leat before the Vikings hit back through full-back Ryan Rossiter.

Knight however went over for his third try of the match before half time, Leat again adding the extras.

Player-coach Joe Bussell and Bailey Jackson went over for the Taunton-based visitors early in the second period, Steffan Pearce converting both.

But the momentum swung back the Romans’ way when Roberts when over for his hat-trick score, Knight converting.

Roberts added a fourth, as did Knight soon after before further tries for Somerset’s Bussell and Rossiter.

Knight’s brother Dan rounded off the scoring for the Romans, Joe converting.

Romans players Mike Harrison and player-coach Tom Howley have been selected for the Armed Forces tour of Australia.

The Romans are still looking to strengthen the squad, with training on Tuesday evenings at 7pm at Leafy Lane.
