WESTBURY booked their place in the semi finals of the Dorset & Wilts Junior Vase as two second-half tries booked a semi final against Pewsey Vale.

The first 15 minutes at Knott Field saw both teams having their fair share of possession, but with good defence by both sides neither could capitalise on good field position.

Westbury then began to pick up the pace and, following a good drive from a lineout by the forwards, the home side’s backs struck after some excellent handling and running lines.

Centre Nathan Brown, breezed through a hole in Cricklade’s defence to open the scoring with Sam McQueen converting.

Cricklade then began to put pressure on Westbury’s defence and, after good offloading out of the tackle, a converted try levelled the scores.

Westbury slowly began to get the upper hand before the interval and fly-half McQueen converted a penalty to edge his side into the lead.

Westbury started the second half on the back foot when Cricklade threw everything at their hosts.

But the defence held up well and they eventually got on the front foot when winger Robert Shaw should have finished off an excellent passage of play by the home side’s backs, unfortunately dropping the ball as he crossed the try line.

However, Westbury continued their pressure and, after some gritty work by the pack, McQueen eluded the defence to score.

Then after a great individual effort breaking through the defence, McQueen scored Westbury’s third try, again to wrap up the win.
