WARMINSTER were unable to overcome the conditions and a youthful Sherborne side as they fell to defeat at Gainsborough Park.

After the hosts had a man yellow carded, Warminster took advantage of the extra player and went 3-0 up when scrum-half Gavin Pratt slotted a penalty following an infringement in the hosts’ midfield.

However, Sherborne hit back with the first of their two tries in the first-half when they were allowed to race down field unopposed to touchdown for a converted score.

The host added their second score before the break when they exploited a gap on the blindside to dive in at the corner.

Sherborne bagged their third try after the interval when a long-kick from the hosts crossed the try-line and headed to the dead-ball line.

Warminster winger James Payne believed that the ball had crossed the dead-ball line and did not make the effort to touch the ball down.

However, the hosts played the whistle and their winger slid in to touch the ball down for a controversial try.

The Amber and Blues hit back with a try of their own when number eight Dean Priestman controlled the ball at the base of the scrum before touching down. Pratt added the extras to reduce the arrears to 17-10.

The hosts increased their cushion to 10 points with a penalty, before Warminster flanker Josh Smith got the final touch on the ball to score the visitors second try after some more impressive work from Priestman at the scrum. Pratt’s conversion went wide.

The hosts bagged a bonus point score in the dying minutes.
