ROYAL Wootton Bassett safely negotiated another step on their march to the Southern Counties South title with a crushing 50-point defeat of visitors Bradford on Avon.

The 55-5 success at Ballards Ash puts Alan Low’s side four points clear of Midsomer Norton at the summit with two games left to play.

A Bassett victory in their next fixture, coupled with the failure of Norton to win, would see Low’s side crowned champions but they will have to wait a fortnight to see if that is how it pans out as they do not play again until a trip to Frome on April 16.

Head coach Low said: “We are two games away now and if we have positive results, then everything is in our hands. We are not relying on other teams to slip up.

“If we carry on what we have been doing, then we should be in a good place but pressure can do funny things to people.

“We have to maintain our focus.

“We have spoken about Frome and we feel it was important that we put in a good performance to be ready for that game. It is frustrating but we know what the schedule is and it’s not just us – every team is saying it’s so stop-start at the moment.

“You build momentum and then you have a week off. We’d obviously like to play this weekend but we will just prepare as best we can in the time off.”

Gavin Ougan led the way for Bassett with a hat-trick of tries, Elye Darragh got two, while Will Hopper, Tom Fieldsend, Connor Tomley and David Hogg also dotted down, with the latter also adding 10 points with the boot.
