BATH & Wiltshire Romans got their season under way with a trip to the New Ravens Challenge Mug invitation competition.

The round-robin format of 13-a-side 20 minute fixtures saw the Romans, based in Corsham, take on the hosting Telford side New Ravens, as well as eventual winners Leicester Storm and Derby.

After a 4-4 draw with the New Ravens, full-back Jimmy Godfrey scoring, an experimental Romans squad put up a good fight in defeat against the Storm, props Liam Cashman and Olly Spence putting in the hard yards in a 12-0 defeat.

In their final fixture against Derby, stand-off Josh Frost dummied his way over the line before second row Tom Culshaw also touched down, but the final conversion attempt was missed as Romans went down 10-8.

The Romans, based at Corsham RFC’s Lacock Road ground, are next in action at the South West 9s at Exeter University on Sunday, May 1, ahead of this summer’s West of England League campaign.
