HEAD coach Tabai Matson reckons the first round of Aviva Premiership action has more than given Bath’s new coaching set-up a taste of what to expect this term.

A Bath side inspired by the boot of George Ford clawed their way to an impressive 18-14 win at Northampton last Saturday in miserable conditions, one of five of the six opening weekend fixtures to be decided by seven points or fewer.

The contest was the first under of new director of rugby Todd Blackadder, and his fellow New Zealander Matson says the rigours of English rugby’s domestic competition have become instantly apparent.

Bath now face their first home fixture of the campaign when Newcastle Falcons visit The Rec on Saturday and Matson expects his side to have another intense battle on their hands.

“There’s a toll every week that you have to pay on a physical front and that’s just part of the game,” said Matson.

“I think we’ve seen already that it’s definitely going to be one of the toughest competitions in the world this year.

“Newcastle’s game against Sale last week was synonymous with what the Premiership is; it’s very physical.

“Although we are pleased with the way we started, one win doesn’t make a season so we just have to go back to the drawing board now and start all over again.

“I’m looking forward with great excitement to that first game at The Rec. I have heard great things about it on a matchday and the buzz around the camp and the town is there already. Hopefully we can put on a good show for the supporters.”

Ford slotted all 18 points at Franklin’s Gardens, masterminding victory in his first appearance for the club since his father, Mike Ford, lost his job as head coach at the end of last season.

After putting summer of speculation regarding his future to bed, Matson lauded the England fly-half’s match-winning performance.

“I think it proved just how valuable having world class half-backs can really be,” said Matson.

“George’s composure in the red zone to make sure he kept kicking those points was superb and that kept Northampton under pressure and probably meant they made a few mistakes as the game got tight towards the end.

“I have dealt with a number of world-class players in my time and George has been exceptional with everything we have done with him so far. He has got a great brain and he always picks the right moment to pass or to run or to kick.

“The pack did a lot of great work to put him in positions to get those points and for him to take them time and again makes it very satisfying for everybody.”

Bath have announced the signing of wing Aled Brew on a short-term deal from Newport Gwent Dragons.
