BATH’S Charlie Ewels believes he and his team-mates are adapting to the Todd Blackadder era with gusto.

Since Blackadder was installed as director of rugby of the Rec, Bath have made a fine start to the season, claiming their fourth victory in five games with a 15-6 win at West Country rivals Gloucester last weekend.

Naturally, second row Ewels says that his side are relishing their current purple patch but also hopes that Bath’s coaches can continue to inspire their charges to develop adequately, without needing to resort to defeats as motivating factors.

“I think they’ve just sort of freshened things up a little bit,” said the 21-year-old.

“I think when anyone new comes in to an organisation, they’ve obviously got some new ways of thinking and some different ideas.

“So they’ve just freshened things up a bit and the guys have responded well to that, and they’ve stepped up and performances from the players have earned the results.

“It’s good because I think we haven’t got to lose to learn.

“That’s one thing the coaches always say but if we’re winning games, we can still take the learning out of those games so the guys are working hard but, of course, things are always nicer when you’re winning and it’s easier to enjoy stuff.”

Ewels also thought that the end justified the means as Bath overcame Gloucester at Kingsholm.

He said: “Okay, it might not have been the prettiest thing to watch on TV but we structured what our game plan was and we delivered what we said we would in the week.

“We got the result that I think we deserved.”
