STRENGTH in depth will be key to Bath’s success this season, according to head coach Tabai Matson after the addition of winger Jack Wilson.

The 26-year-old becomes the third signing in the last two weeks for Todd Blackadder’s side but as they compete on three fronts domestically and on the continent, Matson is keen to make sure they have all bases covered.

“If you are going to consistently perform on all fronts you not only need to have competition but you need to have a deep squad that creates competition through selection,” he said.

“It also means you can manage load and have a bit of variety with your selection.

“Someone like Jack Wilson is very different from an Anthony Watson for example – they offer different things for different games.

“Jack Wilson is a great guy.

“He started off as a loose forward, I actually coached him at the University of Canberra playing colts many years ago.

“He has gone on to be an outside back and has played with Saracens, so he has had experience here in the Premiership.

“He is a big physical outside back and it is a timely move.”

Bath returned to winning ways last Saturday with a 15-6 win away to local rivals Gloucester, which saw them move to third in the Premiership table.

While Matson is not surprised by their lofty position early one, he is keen for his side to maintain their high standards, starting with Sale Sharks at the Rec this evening.

“When you look at when we arrived here and we had been here a couple of weeks, it was very clear that it was a very good squad and the rugby programme was very solid,” he added.

“They wanted to achieve and wanted to bounce back and play well.

“I think who we have played and the performances is reflected in where we sit in the table.

“Clearly there are some big opponents to come and you have got to squirrel away as many acorns as you can before winter.

“The Rec is an amazing place isn’t it? It is not until you get here and watch a game, it has got to be one of them most unique settings in the world.

“Where it sits in the city, the closeness of the stadium and the unison of the fans, it is a pretty cool place to call home."

“I think Sale will be buoyant after their performance against Leicester.

“There will be parts of the game they feel we are vulnerable in and I am sure they will come her with confidence."

Bath winger Anthony Watson is a doubt for England's autumn international Tests after suffering a suspected broken jaw while on a training camp with the national side in Brighton earlier this week.
