BATH prop Kane Palma-Newport says he's enjoying life under new director of rugby Todd Blackadder after capping off a memorable start to the campaign with a fine solo effort in their 30-3 win over Sale Sharks.

The 26-year-old has played in five of Bath’s opening six Aviva Premiership contests and has already got two tries to his name, including a fine sidestep under the lights in last Friday night’s win at the Rec.

With injuries depleting the forward pack, Palma-Newport has grabbed his opportunity with both hands and is thriving in what he describes as a ‘buzzing’ dressing room.

“It has been great, the start of the season,” he said.

“We have had a few injuries, which has allowed me to get some game-time, and I have taken my chance.

“It is great to have been involved in every game, bar one, and to have five wins from six has been great.

“(The try) was fantastic.

“It is not often a prop gets to score a try like that. Most of my tries have been from about an inch out and nobody knows who has scored it.

“To sidestep a back and for everyone to know I have scored is fantastic.

“The camp is absolutely buzzing. We’ve worked hard on and off the field about getting tighter and enjoying what we do.

“We have worked incredibly hard in the last 10 weeks or so but we enjoy what we do and we have put time aside for each other, so when we are grafting, we are doing it for a band of brothers rather than just as individuals.”

A big example of that togetherness was shown last weekend when Palma-Newport was joined by Matt Garvey and Matt Banahan at Twickenham to watch Bath number eight Leroy Houston make his international bow for Australia off the bench.

“That was a special moment,” he added.

“He is such a great friend of ours and unfortunately, his family couldn’t make it because he was told last-minute on the Friday that he was on the bench.

“It meant a lot to him for us to be there at the game. To watch one of our best friends get his debut cap was amazing and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.”
