Dudridge seals win for CATs

CATs 7, Calne 0

BEN Dudridge scored the only try as Melksham CATs edged a drab encounter with Calne 7-0 at The Conigre on Saturday.

The match had been targeted by head coach Dan Jeffries as a must-win, and after emerging victorious, CATs are on course for a top four finish.

In atrocious conditions a classic forward encounter ensued, with the two packs locked together for most of the 80 minutes.

The visitors were superior in the scrum, but CATs locks Nick Tuckett and skipper Will Paviour dominated lineout possession.

Both teams kept possession and defended magnificently, meaning time and space were at a premium.

Mitsubishi man-of-the-match Johann Saaijman was impressive in defence and at the base of a retreating scrum for the home team.

The CATs half back pairing of John Cox and Adam Pondsford used the ball well, keeping the visitors pinned in their own half for most of the match.

Dudridge's try came on 58 minutes and was created when the half backs put him in space, and he sprinted 40 yards to score.

Pondsford's conversion only just made it to posts from 15 metres due to the strong wind, but crept over to make it 7-0.
