CORSHAM gave a good account of themselves as they slipped to a 20-7 defeat
at the hands of play-off chasing Wootton Bassett in the Southern Counties
South Wiltshire derby at Lacock Road.
A determined effort from the hosts saw them thwart high-riding Bassett in
the early exchanges, only for the visitors to forge into a testing lead with
tries from No 8 Alex Penny and centre Tim Gallimore, both converted by the
latter.
A further penalty gave Wootton Bassett a commanding enough 17-0 lead at the
break, and they extended their advantage with a second penalty early in the
second half.
Corsham, again buoyed by encouraging performances from their youthful
element of scrum-half Tom Simons, lock Rhys Jones and back row duo Tom
Knight and Nathan Hand, disrupted Bassett at every turn and they eventually
got their deserved reward when centre Rory Auld darted over for a try,
converted by Andy Williamson.
Corsham 2nds 31, Cooper-Avon Tyres 2nds 7
CAPTAIN and hooker Tim Russell grabbed two tries as Corsham 2nds completed
their promotion-clinching season with a 31-7 home win over their Cooper-Avon
Tyres counterparts in Dorset and Wilts Division Two North.
In a combative and keenly-fought local derby, Corsham eventually got their
noses in front with a try from Russell, converted by fly-half Phil Kernan in
what was his official retirement game.

Russell and Kernan completed the trick for a 14-0 lead, and South African
duo Dominic Giraud, aided by impressive support play from back row Rich
Morea, in his retirement from league rugby, and Donovan Van Lill completed
the Corsham try-scoring in what was an ultimately dominant display.
To their credit, the Melksham side grabbed a late consolation try, while the
only downside for Corsham saw second row Rob Turner later diagnosed with a
broken nose and compressed fracture of the cheekbone after a first-half
altercation.
