WESTBURY Ladies will clinch the South West North Two title with victory at Gordano on March 19 after sharing the spoils with county neighbours Devizes at London Road on Sunday.

The visitors maintained their unbeaten record this season with a 5-5 draw to stay seven points clear of Devizes, who themselves must defeat Gordano this weekend and then Chew Valley on March 19, while hoping for a slip-up from their west Wiltshire counterparts.

Westbury had narrowly won the previous fixture between the two teams in December and knew that victory would secure them the silverware on this occasion, but they were up against it early on as Devizes gained the ascendancy, with strong carries through Emily Pratt, skipper Kate Stradling, Siobhan Spiers and Emma Matthews.

An early penalty attempt by scrum-half Denise Warbutton from long-range fell short but the breakthrough came when a quick ball was recycled and Stradling carried hard and sent Matthews towards the try-line.

Despite being caught by two Westbury tacklers, the wing forward got her pass away to the supporting Georgia Walker, who powered over for her ninth try of the season.

That awoke Westbury, who camped themselves in opposition territory without being able to break through firm home tackling.

Westbury regrouped at half-time and came out firing, with second row Maddie Bias and centre Cara Fitzgerald to the fore as captain Anna Hemingway picked the ball up and crashed over the line to even the scores.

Devizes put on more pressure and Westbury lost Hemingway to a yellow card shortly before the finish, but they held on to leave their title destiny in their own hands.
