COACH Jack Bates paid tribute to the “massive achievement’’ of Westbury Ladies after they wrapped up the South West North Two title in emphatic style on Sunday.

Knowing a mere victory at Gordano would be enough to secured the silverware, Westbury instead underlined their status as the best team in the division by romping to a 56-7 triumph.

Westbury completed an unbeaten 12-match campaign as skipper Anna Hemingway led the way with five tries and Bates said: ““The whole squad have been fantastic all season – committing to training and playing.

“The team spirit within the squad is fantastic and everyone plays for each other.

“This is all led by our fantastic captain Anna, who sets high levels of performance week in and week out. “It is a massive achievement to not only win a league but also go undefeated, but no more than the ladies deserve.’’ Hemingway added: “I am very proud of the way this season has gone and how we have improved since last season.

“We set ourselves a goal at the start of the season and we definitely achieved it by winning the league undefeated.

“Everyone giving their all at every training sessions and every game just goes to show what you can do when your best friends are your team mates.”

Strong winds made conditions difficult at Gordano but within two minutes, full-back Lana Plummer had powered through for the opening try and converted herself.

Hemingway had secured a hat-trick of scores by half-time, while Maddie Bias and Kerry Ackerman also crossed the whitewash before Gordano posted a solitary conervted effort to trail 32-7 at the interval.

Westbury came back out firing, two more quick tries from Plaummer and Hemingway, both converted by Plummer, following.

As rain made conditions even worse, Jess Wells was next on the scoresheet with her eighth try of the season before Hemingway fittingly rounded off the tally with her fifth and 14th in total this season.
