TROWBRIDGE head coach Dan Jeffries believes the building blocks are in place to establish the club at South West level after they wrapped up the Southern Counties South title last weekend.

The Doric Park side ensured elevation next season as a 31-5 success at nearest rivals Marlborough secured the silverware with one match of the campaign to spare.

A pair of late second-half tries from Matt Howard and substitute Dave Finley cued the celebrations for Trowbridge, but Jeffries already has one eye on next season’s goal.

It will be a case of third time lucky for Jeffries’ men in the regional second tier following two previous attempts at securing their status in South West One.

But the coach believes he now has the tools available to help Trowbridge cement themselves in the higher leagues and further.

“Winning the league means a huge amount,” said Jeffries. “We deserve to be in this division.

“Trowbridge is a really strong club with a really good squad coming through and four strong senior teams.

“We’ve used these past two years to pull things together and get the right people into the right positions.

“We’ve got some ways of playing that will make us more established in South West One.

“The club has been in the division twice and both teams been there for two seasons and come back down.

“We’ve now got a bigger and more experienced squad to cause as much trouble possible among the top teams.

“Establishing ourselves in South West One is something the club is very capable of.”

Jeffries was adjacent to Trowbridge’s touchline when the club was last in the South West One while he coached Salisbury during the 2015-16 campaign.

Recalling the time his then side faced the west Wiltshire men, he found it hard to believe the club was in the position it was.

“When we played Trowbridge it was the closest game we had all season,” said Jeffries.

“We won the game in the last minute and I couldn’t fathom how Trowbridge were in the position they were before eventually getting relegated.

“The boys will now have a couple of months of well-earned rest.

“A bit like we’ve done for most of the season, we’ll then flick the switch when it’s time to go.

“They’ll work as hard as they’ve ever worked, and I know with the team we’ve got and the players we’re trying to bring together we’ll be an even stronger team in September than what we are now.”

First though, Jeffries is keen on avoiding an unwanted league double in their final Southern Counties South match on Saturday.

Victory for North Dorset at Doric Park would make them the only team to defeat Trowbridge both at home and on the road this season and Jeffries is in no mood to let that record slip, even after securing promotion.

He said: “North Dorset were the only team that gave us any trouble up front.

“It was before we clicked as a team when we last faced them, but when the celebration died down on Saturday the first thing the team talked about was how much owe North Dorset.

“The game won’t make a difference to our league position, but it will make a difference to our pride.

“No team has beaten us at home and away this season, we don’t plan on that record changing come Saturday.”
