Amesbury Town all but sealed the Under 13s Blue Division title
with a tremendous team performance at Melksham Town in a nail biting
encounter.
The home side are the only team that can catch Amesbury but this win now
leaves Amesbury needing only one point from their remaining two fixtures to
be crowned champions.
The first half, although goal-less, produced some tremendously passionate
though controlled football from both sides. Amesbury looked calm at the back
with the entire back four playing with superb confidence against a
physically strong Melksham forward line.

A sustained period of pressure from Amesbury resulted in a Tyler Brockway
free kick from 25 yards forcing the home goalkeeper to produce a good save
to turn the ball away for a corner.
Then Finn Drury was unlucky to see his hooked volley from the resultant kick
go just over the bar.
Amesbury's midfield were battling hard and fighting for everything, with
Conor Harrington and Joey Barnwell epitomising the spirit of the Amesbury
team in wanting to dominate and dictate the play.
Drury and Harry Beckley linked well up front and caused the home defence
numerous problems with their astute play and awareness. This game was indeed
a battle that Amesbury seemed determined to win and they edged the first
period in terms of quality and hunger.
Seven minutes into the second half Amesbury took the lead with the goal that
was to prove the winner.
Conor West, who was having a fine game, played the ball across to Drury and
the tall Blues striker switched the ball to his left foot and held off his
marker before curling in a superb strike from 25 yards.
Nathan Nightingale then swung in a cross from the right and Harrington threw
himself forward and his diving header forced the Melksham keeper to go down
low to his left to turn the ball around the post.
Nightingale then almost doubled the lead midway through the half when he cut
in from the right but elected to try his luck with his left foot and the
ball went harmlessly wide.
Amesbury were now looking the more likely side to score again and Beckley
was unlucky when he saw his shot cannon off the cross bar and the ball
bounce back into play.
Brockway and Adam Flint seemed to have the measure of the Melksham forwards
and limited their efforts against keeper Tom Hollinworth to a absolute
minimum.
Both full backs West and Rory Johnstone held the line well and pushed
forward in support of others at every opportunity and wingers Nightingale
and Jake Chambers caused the home defence constant problems with their
direct running and good crosses.
When the two teams meet again in the League Cup Final everyone can be
assured of another close encounter between, undoubtedly, the two best teams
in the division.
AFC Corsham were convincing 9-1 winners away to Bradford Town Youth White.
George White scored for Bradford with his 30th goal of the season so far.
