Thousands flock to FC Chippenham tournament

NEARLY 6,000 people attended FC Chippenham's annual six-a-side tournament at Stanley Park at the weekend.

Over 300 teams of boys and girls took part, with nearly 90 more sides than last year involved.

The event, which is one of the largest youth tournaments in the area, went on all day on Saturday and Sunday.

Traffic in the town caused some teams to turn up late, but once they arrived no side missed out on playing and everyone had fun, as event organiser Steve Manifold explained.

Manifold said: "The kids seemed to enjoy themselves. We were just short of 6,000 people there so it was quite busy.

"We started at 9am both days and the last final kicked off at 8pm both days.

"There was a good mix of standards which is nice to see.

"Some have good sides and some turn up with their C or E team who are no less enthusiastic, which is fine by us.

"As a club we've got good players and those who like playing and we're quite happy to accommodate the whole range. It was nice to see other clubs turning up with a mix of abilities."

Manifold said the weather had just held out over the course of the weekend.

Manifold said: "The weather was decent and that's a bonus.

"It threatened to rain most of Saturday and we had about five minutes when it spitted, but that was it.

"Sunday was brighter, but slightly windier."

It was the 17th annual FC Chippenham youth tournament and the fourth competition in a row to be held at Stanley Park.
