Former Dorothy House nurse Sue Wyper died at the Winsley hospice on November 9, aged 67.

Mrs Wyper was born in Frodsham, Cheshire, on December 22, 1946.

When she was two, her father’s career in the colonial service took the family – Sue, her mother Ann Wheller and her brother and sister – to Uganda, where they stayed for eight years, before moving back to England.

Mrs Wyper considered her early years in Africa as a privilege and described having a short but wonderful time there.

Back in England, she attended a boarding school in Talbot Heath, Bournemouth, before moving to Winsley in 1962. She met her husband, David, at a friend’s birthday party.

They got engaged in 1966 after spending two years apart while David served in Singapore.

They married later that year at St Nicholas Church in Winsley.

In 1964 Mrs Wyper discovered her love of nursing.

She trained for many years and worked at the Bath and Wessex Orthopaedic Hospital, now part of the RUH.

In 1977 the family moved to South Wraxall. After putting her nursing career on hold to have her four sons, Mrs Wyper returned to the profession in 1991, first at the RUH’s haematology ward, and then at Dorothy House, where she worked for nearly 15 years.

Mrs Wyper loved the outdoors and encouraged her young children to venture out into the world, taking them on many camping trips.

Mrs Wyper also loved village life and was an active member of the church in South Wraxall.

She leaves her husband David, sons Andrew, James, Iain and Hamish and a grandson, Sam.

Her funeral will be at St James Church, South Wraxall tomorrow (Saturday) at 11.30am followed by a private committal.

Family flowers only but donations can be made to Dorothy House or Médecins Sans Frontières in memory of her love for Africa and the fight against Ebola.
