At one time Southwick had a number of pubs: the Royal Oak, White Swan, Red Lion, the Axe and Cleaver, and the Fleur-de-Lys.
The Axe and Cleaver, formerly the New Inn, was run by Matilda Taylor in the 1920s. During the early the 1990s the public house became a Chinese restaurant and was renamed The Wych, but restored to its old name in 2006. But recently after being empty and boarded up for two years the once popular pub was demolished to make way for the Southwick centre.
* Has anyone got a picture of the White Swan in Church Street? Southwick records show it was sold in 1935.
