Hunt is on to find local rugby stars

Were you a member of the all-conquering Chippenham Boys High School rugby squad from 1972-1977? Were you a member of the all-conquering Chippenham Boys High School rugby squad from 1972-1977?

Corsham town councillor Chris Stewart is hunting for former team-mates from his days as a pupil at the former Chippenham Boys High School.

The school’s rugby team enjoyed a string of successes and went unbeaten in their 1972 campaign – sadly, unlike England in this year’s Six Nations Championship.

Mr Stewart, who is now 49, and his fellow players were proud of their achievement. Now Mr Stewart wants to be reunited with his old teammates, in what has been an important week in the European rugby calendar.

Martin Johnson’s men fell at the final hurdle in Dublin on Saturday but Chris Stewart and co went undefeated in their illustrious season.

Mr Stewart said: “The team was set up by the sports teacher Gwyn Rees. We did so well that we went through the whole season without losing a game. We played across Wiltshire and Bristol and the team went on for a number of years.

“We’ve all gone our separate ways and a lot has happened since and it would just be interesting to get everyone together again to see where we all ended up.”

Mr Stewart can recall the names of all the players but one, but believes that sadly some of the team may since have died.

The picture belongs to friend Dave Lyus, who has treasured it for 35 years of being in his possession.

Ezra Ledgister, who is pictured, bumped into Mr Stewart in Hong Kong in 1987, where he was serving in the Royal Marines. They did not see each other for years after that surprise meeting, but were recently reunited on the social networking website Facebook.

Anyone able to help Mr Stewart reunite his old teammates can contact him on 01249 700118.
