My Wiltshire Life - Joan Saunders
Joan Saunders
Joan Saunders

JOAN Saunders, 70, is secretary of the Trowbridge and District Horticultural Society, which held its 63rd annual general meeting recently and has been in existence for more than 70 years.

Born in Yorkshire, Mrs Saunders moved to Wiltshire with her husband 27 years ago and was a teacher at John of Gaunt School before she retired. She joined the club because she knew nothing about gardening, and is at pains to point out that membership requires no special knowledge and it welcomes interest from anyone interested in gardens, flowers and vegetables. The group meets on the second Monday of each month at St James' Church Hall in Union Street at 8pm and features guest speakers as well as annual trips to special gardens around the country. To find out more call Mrs Saunders on (01225) 764716.

How would your best friend describe you?

As a tidy, very busy person but equally calm and not easily frazzled.

Where would you recommend for a great evening out?

I go out with three friends on a regular basis but we always try somewhere new, whether it be in the countryside or the town.

What I love about Wiltshire is there is always somewhere new to visit so I would recommend trying everything.

What do you do for fun?

Gardening and I love reading detective novels. The only problem is when they make it on to the television I invariably know who the villain is!

Describe your most vivid dream.

I don't usually have nightmares. In fact my dreams are normally pleasant affairs.

Who in the public eye do you most respect and why?

I have never been one for heroes. I tend to respect people who don't get paid very much but carry on working very hard at what they do, often in dreadful conditions - the unsung heroes of our world.

What is your biggest regret?

Not getting into teaching early enough. I studied at university during my 30s and started working when I was 40 but I wish I had got into it earlier because it is what I wanted to do.

What is your favourite television programme?

Cranford was really good and it featured local scenes. I liked Judi Dench's character Miss Matty Jenkyns.

What makes you sad?

Bigots who won't give other people a chance. I hate injustice.

Describe your perfect day.

It would be a lovely spring day and I would get up knowing there weren't too many calls on my time. Then I would go into the garden and look at the bulbs and plan some planting.

I think a trip out with friends in the evening and a glass of wine would be nice, then off to bed at 10pm.
