My Wiltshire Life - Denis Barnard
Denis Barnard
Denis Barnard

Denis Barnard, 74, was born and raised in Chapmanslade and is a well-known figure in the village. He helped his father run the village post office for many years before taking it over himself in 1960.

He was a school manager at Chapmanslade junior school and treasurer at the congregational chapel for 34 years. He has held all posts at the village committee except treasurer and is a parish councillor. On top of all this he is an auctioneer at Frome market and keen Rotarian and fundraiser.

How would your best friend describe you?

Reliable, helpful, humorous and sociable.

Where would you recommend for a great evening out?

A great evening would be at a good friends house with 12 people around a dinner table.

What do you do for fun?

I enjoy gardening and travelling. A lot of my time is taken up by village matters. I am a keen Rotarian and I received the Paul Harris Fellowship award several years ago and I was presented with the sapphire award last week.

What motto or phrase do you try to live your life by?

If you can't say something good about someone don't say anything. I also read a lovely quote from Mother Teresa, which said "don't spend to much time judging, it leaves less time for loving".

Who in the public eye do you most respect and why?

Anyone who is always the total professional at all times.

What is your biggest regret?

Probably spending too little time with my children when they were growing up because I was so busy.

What is your favourite TV programme or film and why?

I think The Apprentice, which is currently running is great because it involves so much emotion and huge ability of Alan Sugar.

I do like programmes like QI by Stephen Fry too, serious panel games, and I enjoy Question Time.

What makes you sad?

The fact there is an increase in the number of young people who seem to have little faith in their future.

Describe your perfect day.

A full English brunch then tea at the Ritz and a London show in the evening.
